Right. So anyone that thinks the Dollar General is a grocery store probably is operating in a clue free environment. Do they sell food, yes. So does 7-11. Dollar General, like all retailers, works on their key demographics. Grocery stores do to. You don't open a grocery store where there are not enough customers to support it. Same for the dollar store.

An entire chain, Fred's, just shut down a week or two ago. They catered to more rural communities and did have some grocery stores in their portfolio. Business go where clients exist and support them. It is just that simple.

Dollar General doesn't make you eat less healthy, your hands do. What ever they grab and stuff into your pie hole is what you eat.

Once again!!! Anti-corporation whiners hate success. It is not a Dollar store's responsibility to to put square meals on the table. Brick and mortar fresh food/perishable retail marketing has a lot of overhead. DG is attempting gain the highest average amount of revenue per square foot. That is their market approach. The whiners need to stop making businesses responsible for their customers lifestyle decisions.

I run a small dairy farm about a mile out of town. I wasn't happy when I saw the Dollar General (DG) go up directly across the street. Not because they were my competition... they just generate a lot of traffic on what was a quiet state trunk line.

As a side business, I was already providing subscription produce, fresh poultry, cured meats and dairy share services to about 40 families in the area. My business subscription service tripled in the year DG went up, and now I have a wait list. I've also set up a Farmer's market and rent space to small truck farm's that bring their produce to my farm to sell. It's convenient for my customers to pop over and get their fresh food baskets on their pick up days, after they're done at DG. I don't have to manage a dry goods and general mercantile, Dollar General doesn't have to carry produce and meat.

In addition, I provide DG with fire wood bundles for the summer camping season and my firewood doesn't walk off when I'm not around.

I've helped other small farmers pair with half a dozen DG's in the area. In some cases the DG's are allowing the farmers to set up truck stands in the parking lots. I suggest the whiners practice free enterprise... See a need, find a solution, make some money. It's American as apple pie.
