As long as we rely on an open network it will never be truly secure. In the past five years my military records, military health records, civilian information, two credit cards, and my OPM information has been breached. Companies leave it on the member/consumer to have hack coverage. I saw if you can't keep your system safe- cost of business and the business covers the loss for the consumer/member. I guarantee when cost overruns go back to the source- it will get fixed fast. But I am a conspiracy theorist.

MSG Frederick Otero - yep. That exactly. Too smart for our own good and too many crappy people to trust to do the right thing.

Sgt Martin Querin - We outsource too much. We have too little HUMINT and little incentive for rectifying it. ONE GENERAL is not the answer. EVERY BRANCH needs to take a focused look at two-man-control, need-to-know, etc. And not to flog a dead horse but when the highest office in the nation (GOP as well as DNC) are serving little to no time for security abuses then it really shouldn't surprise anyone that the soldier in the trenches isn't concerned.

I agree with respect yo the value of HUMINT. But the need to develop cyber ops is an equally important facet of our security. We now have a third front to protect.

Cyber is a tool. The oven is not the ingredient; the oven cooks the ingredients. Protecting the oven does no good if the cook places no value on the ingredients or even the cooks. Think of how we operate right this moment; you and I both using different systems with different software. What are we using? Windows 10 for me; you? What about anti-virus? Now before you answer, consider an additional question: despite what you use/bought/swear-by, do you still get SPAM? Why is that? What if I told you that a portion of your chip suppliers have built-in trojans? Ooops. Remember the 1989 outrage when Toshiba sold some submarine tech that we used to the Russians? We got angry didn't we? Whats todays answer?

We have modern sailors unable to navigate their way out of Iranian water and presidents awarding medals to spyplane crews for not destroying their plane. Perhaps a return to old school handling and protocols is a mandatory first step? All DoD PCs made in China? And using Russian anti-v software? Wow - that kinda takes the cake doesn't it? Kind of like asking the fox to guard the hen house. Yet - were the people elected demand a safer American solution, they would then be forced out or fired. Having a secret clearance for my job, I was pleased to note that someone with a brain has decreed that your credit report is now looked at! Bravo dumerica for finally realizing that the best data comes from those who would sell their soul for a car payment. Its a step in the right direction.

Get rid of spurious clearances, go back to centralized control and start jailing f**kups. Including sec of states who can't be bothered to control data and news outlets posting troop movements.

Great article. Great to see the Army also sending people to pick the brains of others, instead of reinvent the wheel.
