I was stationed in the Canal Zone, Panama when I saw it on National TV! If I'm not mistaken, the VC was capture during the TET offensive attack on Saigon in 1968. There were coordinated attacks all across South Vietnam, I had left Vietnam in 1967!

SFC Chuck Martinez - I was just north of the city of Hue’ when the attacks began. We in the Army’s 1st Cavalry Division had arrived at our new base camp (Camp Evans) from Bihn Dihn Province on about 28 January and were digging our defensive positions when the nightly celebration of the Lunar New Year erupted with fireworks. We had been told to expect that but it was actually the sound of gunfire and incoming rockets and mortars.

If you want to venture forth with pitchforks and torches in search of villains, feel free to start without me SPC Jeff Daley, PhD.
I long ago learned to accept the discouraging utility of Hanlon's Razor in threat assessment: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."
