I understand the public demands accountability of police.
2 supervisors were fired due to video equipment not turned on. 3 were fired for chat messages.
The issue I see is this was a suicide. He took the shoestrings out of his shoes to kill himself.
The officers did not to assist the suicide. Yet, personal responsibility is again not required to blame the police for a death.

When I was in county jail myself, my shoes were taken away and stored (got them back on release) . That is a basic SOP that the officers on duty failed to do.

SPC Paul Shene III -
That is the SOP of the jail that you were in.
Every single jail, whether it is city, county, State, or private, has their own procedures. While many have similar procedures, there are differences. The fact that the story doesn't state anything about taking the shoes as a firing reason is an indication that it wasn't a policy violation.
Early in my career, I was at a police department that had it's own jail cells (many do not). Our procedure was to remove the laces and leave the shoes (we didn't have the budget to provide slip ons or coveralls). Again, every agency does not require this.

Ok, so the 2 guys who didn't follow SOP and the dude hung himself, should be fired. The others apparently sent meany texts to each other? WTF? And the family demands "accountability" from whom, exactly? The first two or the mean Tweet guys?

Sgt (Join to see) - I have a dark sense of humor. The line for me is the demise of the person in my custody. (I was an OR tech during Desert Shield/Storm, so having a dark and twisted sense of humor was the norm)

SPC Paul Shene III - Then that is your line, not others'. Some of us don't have a line of what can be made fun of. If you don't understand it or appreciate it and why it's sometimes necessary, that's on you.

Sgt (Join to see) - Yes that is MY line. So we will have to agree to disagree. I think all 5 should be punished, you believe only the 2 that were hands on involved in the results should be punished (for negligence). Neither of us will change our mind on this.
