During the late 60s there was a "monster" gator that lived in an estuary near the Sneads Ferry gate of Camp LeJeune. We helicopters kept track of it since it was close to several of our confined area landing zones. Estimated size was between 16 and 20 feet and we nicknamed it Old Mossy because of all the green stuff on his back whenever it was spotted. I understand some misguided infantrymen shot it sometime in the 90s. It's good to be a pilot and remain above such critters.
