I am making a trip to visit the area for Veterans Day and would like to know before hand what to expect.

Fayetteville, NC is just outside the base at Ft. Bragg. It was known to be hostile back in the day, like Vietnam was. From what I understand, it is not as bad as it used to be, but the name just stuck.

FayetteNam references Fayetteville, NC, which is the city located next to Fort Bragg. Many soldiers who were heading to Vietnam left from and returned to Fort Bragg and Fayetteville.

In the old days up to late 90's, Fayetteville (just outside Bragg) was famous for taking everything they could from the troops. This was Blood Alley where whores and bad bars abounded, and fights/get rolled were common place. Hay Street was Bar city with 10-15 bars and a couple of sad eatery's. In 2000 the city closed down all the bars on Hay St and demolished Blood Alley, putting business, restaurants, etc. Now it is quite tame.

Thanks for the answers guys. Don't want to get there and smell it again. People talk of the beauty of Viet Nam, while the only beauty I saw was the 707
