It depends on your branch. For example, most branches receive duty assignments prior to commissioning. However, there are branches like Infantry and Aviation where you will find out your duty assignment at the conclusion of BOLC. If selected for Active Duty, you will make a dream sheet with your top ten preferred duty locations. Now, lets assume you pick a branch like MI or OD. You will find out your duty station prior to commissioning, but there is no guarantee you will get your #1 choice (Fort Campbell/101st) because everything is based on the needs of the Army. There may not be slots available in the 101st near your commission date, so you end up with your #2 choice (let's go with Fort Carson/4th ID for example). In my commissioning class, two good friends of mine branched OD. One got his first choice, ironically Campbell. My other friend got Korea and it wasn't even on his top ten list. The only recommendation I have is to maintain a high GPA, above a 270 PT score, and excel at Advanced Camp if you haven't been already. BLUF: Everything is based on the needs of the Army, but performing well could help you stand out against your peers. Also, you could try contacting your branch manager and he/she could put you on a list where if a slot opens up for a specific duty station he/she will give you a call.

Good luck. Let me know if you have any questions.

When I recieved my orders for OBC (BOLC now?) I already had a unit assignment. Once at OBC many traded assignments with others in their class. For example, I was supposed to go to Fort Hood after OBC, but I traded assignments with a classmate (coordinated with our assignments officer). He went to Hood and I took his assignment to Germany.

I will assume that after Basic Officer Leaders Course you would like to be assigned to the 101st ABN DIV, right? If that’s your question then sometime during the las phase of BOLC you should be able to contact your branch manager and requests your first assignamnet. Key note here is request since you might already be allocated somewhere else already.
