The ceremony included performances from the U.S. Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps and 3rd Infantry Regiment Silent Drill Team. The celebration calmed to a somber mood for cannon fire and playing of Taps to remember lives lost during the war.

Several soldiers who formed an honorary guard around the ceremony with American flags nearly fainted in the heat as others came to relieve their duties. Bottles and cups of water were distributed to the crowd, many who sat in metal bleachers as the temperature approached 90 degrees.

Vietnam veterans, despite the lack of respect they were shown, have been central to welcoming home troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, Baker said.
