Enjoy it. Remember, 99.9 percent of the time what the sergeant wants you to do is good for you, though you may not believe it at the time. Play the game, try to stay gung ho. By about the three year mark you will either still see it as a game, and a stupid one, and get out. Or, you will start to see the reality behind all the forms and sometimes seemingly meaningless functions, and then you're ready to start being a career soldier. I have no specific advice as I was in for 22.6 years, and I have been retired longer than that, so I am out of touch with present day training details. Enjoy. Learn, and enjoy yourself.

I was a 12B DS.
Regardless of task, training event or PT do your best. Follow all instructions, ask related questions and most importantly be a mix between a strong Sapper and smart Sapper. If the chance for additional schools (Airborne or B6) come up take them. Try not to be cool guy, show off, clown or know it all. Get really good at the small daily task, like Making bunks, take out trash, shaving your face, reading your blue book, and eating fast. Going from The BCT portion into the AIT part, nothing really changes. Maybe a pass, but DS will still be there everyday, at course with instructors at the demo range, well everywhere.

Deployments depends on the unit and their rotation, but do all training at the unit. Get tight with your team/squad/platoon and make sure you are reliable (regardless if at OSUT or at unit).

Rule #1.... Dont over think it. Everyone thinks that its a terrible terrible experience & that youre expected to quit which isnt the case. Its all mental. Osut is a cake walk, just stay focused & dont f**k up. That simple.

As for deploying.. The day I graduated I walked into my battalion S1, they asked if I wanted to deploy, I said yes, & they said “cool, youll be gone in a few months, heres your unit.” Again, super chill, super easy, keep your head in the game, & just be the best soldier you can be.
