What should I know about Fort Stewart for my first duty station?

Just found out my new duty station will be Fort Stewart. This will bet first duty station straight out of AIT. Can anyone give me information on what it's like there and what to expect? Do's and don'ts?

Learn the Dog Face Soldier song and love it. To this day it is still my favorite song in the army better than any cadence I've ever heard. Rock of the Marne!

I am currently deployed but I am stationed at Fort Stewart. I have been to just about every Army base in the world and they are all pretty much the same, the only thing that changes is the weather.
Fort Stewart is a nice post and the 3rd Infantry Division has a long and proud history. Savannah, Georgia is about 30 minutes away and is an awesome city full of rich culture and history. You will be place in the Marne Reception Company while you inprocess post. you will be there for about two weeks. You will get a bunch of classes, go to CIF, do P.T. and everything else that goes with inprocessing.
Every place you go in the Army is only as good as you make it. Stay away from the Soldiers that talk bad about the unit or the installation, they are bad influences and will only bring your motivation down. Stay positive, work hard and you will be successful wherever you go.
Learn the Dogface Soldier song before you get there as you sing it everyday. I have attached the link for the Fort Stewart website. It has the inprocessing procedures for newly arriving Soldiers and you can download a copy of the Marne Standards book (the song is in there).

If you are coming from Ft. Sill, you will find a big difference in the two installations. Ft. Sill still operates from many of the old historical buildings and is a very picturesque post. It's spread out and carries a more relaxing atmosphere when you come onto the post. I came here from Ft. Sill in 2007 and miss the more relaxed atmosphere, but then I'm getting old(ER) also. However, I enjoy what I do here, have met some great people and plan to be here for a while longers.
Fort Stewart's cantonment area is mostly new militayr construction, more consolidated and closer together. Ft. Stewart's population is more than bliss, so there is more traffic congestion on post as well as off post. Hinesville is smaller than Lawton, but it is spread out. The nearest mall is in Savannah about 40 minutes away.
If you like the beach scene, there are several good ones within an 45 minutes to an hour both to the north and south of Ft. Stewart. We also have Hunter Army Air Field which is a subordinate installation to Fort Stewart, but located in Savannah as well. The major units there are the 3rd Infantry's Aviation Bde and the a Battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment. A 30 minute dirve.
We are located 10 miles west of interstate 95 which runs north/north along the coast and then Interstate 16 (east-west) is 25 miles north of post if heading to Atlanta. The Savannah Airport is about 45 minutes up the interstate for quick and easy access. It is not a busy airport at all.
Fort Stewart has an active BOSS program and the MWR always many different trips going on, either concerts, sports events, Disney World, and many others. There is plenty to do if you will just get out there and do it.

I just swore into the military and although I know the "Wish List" for duty stations doesn't matter too much, I would like to know what bases focus on 68K (Medical Laboratory Specialist) or what duty stations those who did medical preferred. Any suggestions?

You can expect for your command to demand discipline. You can expect to run lot, you can expect to do training in the field alot.
Fort Stewart can be a good assignment. Get out of the area, when you can and travel. You can be at the beach in an hour, You're just a couple of hours from Florida. Not too far from South Carolina. I used to go to Hilton Head from there. Not too far from Savanna, Ga. Its a nice city in its own right. Just be a professional Soldier, and travel when you're off-duty. If you stay in the Hinesville area all the time, u probably won't like Fort Stewart

100% correct. I don't mind Fort Stewart, so much, I love the location and proximity to the beaches and historic sites! I cannot STAND Hinesvegas, or the fact that you have to drive through it, to get anywhere to the south, or go down the length of GA 144 to get anywhere to the north.

Glennville is a nice community near Fort Stewart, but. If you stay in Richmond Hill (which's expensive), Glennville, Ludowici (sp?), Jesup, or Pembroke, expect high gas costs, high Commute times, and congestion at the gates at peak times of day.
