This is an interesting story just as interesting as the book A Higher Calling about the German Ace who was one kill away from the Iron Cross and decided not to destroy the B-17 that was just chewed up the pieces and he escorted it out to sea.

Great story. I was fascinated by the part of the story where the Russians and American pilots were attacking each other. Thanks for posting it.

OK, what is so 'shocking' about this story?
That he was imprisoned as a POW for 10 years by the Soviets? That his son died while he was a POW to the Soviets after the war?
Or is it because that after he was released that he was a pilot and commander in the West German Air Force? Or is it because he did not support the purchase and use of the F-104 by West Germany?
