Just an FYI, on-post housing is mandatory in USAREUR for Soldiers with dependents (may vary by installation) and a lot of the housing is stairwell housing. Enlisted Soldiers E6 and below are assigned to barracks. If you and/or your family live off-post now, make sure you're ready for on-post housing in Germany. It's generally much smaller than what you're used to, and if you're in a stairwell, you won't have a yard or much privacy. Germany is great though.

I was the last rotation to get off post housing in Germany, and it is part of what made the experience so awesome for me. I doubt I would have enjoyed it as much as I did if I were pinned in an American Ghetto, nor do I have a desire to go back were I still in. Living on the economy is what made it a great experience.

I'd been with a group Tate been supposed to go there, though only periodically...I'd wanted something different, so I'd been allowed to switch units, though I frequently wonder if I'd have perhaps been a trifle hasty, quite often, for myriad reasons. I'd have seen something of Europe, certainly, and units overseas, which I'd never done, I was strictly CONUS, and, though I went numerous places here, I often find myself envying those who'd had a chance to go outside the US, if onoy for the difference and/or novelty. A friend of mine got to hop flights on leave to the UK, as one of his brothers got married there. I similarly wish I'd have hopped flights to other countries while on leave, even space A, I did on permissive TDY once, though only in CONUS, I'm afraid.
