Originally Kealakekua bay was Kealakeakua: the path of the ancestors.
Hawaiians had no gods, only revered ancestors. Akua was translated as "gods" because they treated their reknown ancestors as Europeans treated their gods. In actuality, akua literally means 'from behind' or 'from before/earlier.'
