Eratosthenes used the same method at Aswan in Egypt in about 200 BC to try to put a value on the circumference of the Earth, comparing how far off the angle of the sun was from Alexandria. He then used the distance between the cites and that angle for his calculations. He did a good job, coming with 1.5% of the actual value.
