MSG Benavidez was hero of mine and one of the bravest Americans ever to wear the uniform. But my thoughts are why rename Ft Hood? Many of these Army posts named after Southern Generals we’re established when there were still Civil War veterans alive. It was a token of respect and reconciliation to our Southern citizens, whose fathers and grandfathers had worn Confederate Grey. Yes, it was disrespectful to our Soldiers of African-American descent. But it’s not going to change a darn thing today, except as another attempt by the Left to divide us by race.

Additionally when you start tearing down statues and renaming things, where does it end? That’s the kind of crap the Commies, Nazis and tim-pot tyrants do. It’s sets a precedent that gives SJW fools a reason to change Ft Benavidez to Ft RuPaul because our “transgender troops” declared that the good MSG was straight male. If it bothers you that we have posts named after Confederate generals, you need to find something else to occupy your time.

OTOH if we build another Camp, Post, training center by all means, name it after MSG Benavidez! I’m all for that!

General Hood was a fine man. Your getting your history mixed up. This civil unrest came about over state’s rights vs federal power. Lincoln only used slavery as a campaign gimmick m for his 2nd election. Slavery was an issue that was on its way out, which still had roots in the North.
The Texas units fought well as 99% or more did not own slaves. They fought for their lands.
I am not trying to take away from Sgt Benavidez at all but you’re talking about changing the name of a major military installation. In case you haven’t noticed, there are many patriots of the Texas Republic and the War of Attrition that have counties, cities, schools buildings, highways, etc. named after them.

I've served in units where they get reflagged. So one day, the 3rd Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment becomes the 5th Battalion, 77th Armor Regiment. Seems more of a hassle to change, for no real reason. Then the division (8th ID) reflagged and became the 1st Armor Division. More money with a patch change.
Then the battalion moves from Germany to Fort Lewis and becomes part of the 2nd Infantry Division. Another patch change. Then gets reflagged to 1-32 Armor before standing down for good.

If you want to name something after this American hero, rename something that has no name. Like the North Fort Hood area, or the West Fort Hood area. Or call the impact area or one of the nameless tank ranges.

Better yet, how about that one interstate stretch that travels from I35 into Hood itself. It used to be Highway 190, but I think was renamed into an I-something number years ago. Change the name to the Roy Benavidez Expressway/Highway/Parkway.
