As E-1, 92F fresh out of AIT heading to JBER what can I expect?

My youngest son is on the AF side. He hates the winter months due to the darkness like, SSG Jamil Spruill mentioned. My son has to close the curtains in the summer so he can sleep.
The cold isn't much different than here in Montana but I guess it depends on where you are from and what you are used to.
Things cost more since it has to be shipped or trucked up. I guess it's hard to get some stuff mailed/shipped up there from some places, especially heavier items. We wind up having to send bigger stuff here and then send it on to Alaska.
Good luck on your assignment. Things are what you make of them. If you miss home or just want to bitch and be miserable then you will be. There is always something to do wherever you go. Make the best out of every assignment and things will be good.

Be ready for the cold, but don't let it keep you from enjoying the tour. I did 3 years at JBER, and truly enjoyed it. There is quite a bit to do in the area, especially if you are into outdoor things. Lots of hiking trails, great hunting and fishing. There were two air shows (both involving the Thunderbirds) in my time there. Also, the ceremonial start of the Iditarod is in downtown Anchorage, which is about 5 minutes outside the gate. Something to see at least once.
Bottom line, this is definitely one of those "you get out of it what you put into it" assignments. Go in with an open mind, and you might find that you really enjoy it.

Learn the area fast, tons of one way roads, Anchorage is a town more targetted for single people. Be prepared to do ranges in the snow, do PT as low as -20 degrees, hiking up Artic Valley, ruck marching on base near the lakes, its like 5 or more lakes, Otter Lake is the warmer one with cottages for rent I think. Day light months get maybe an 30 minutes to an hour of darkness and winter months 10 am to about 2 pm is daylight. Dont start arguments in clubs especially with anyone Samoan, real good people but dont play games if you anger them. I was there to stand up 4/25 assigned to 3rd/509th 28 April 2005 till 10 July 2008
