Operation intrinsic action

I was deployed to Kuwait for intrinsic action 97-03 with the 1-12 Infantry. I pcsed from the unit to Germany days after our return to the states. As a young E-2 who didn't know any better, I never got a copy of the orders for the deployment. Is there a way I can get those orders now? I was never able to get it onto my DD214 and I want to get it fixed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was on that same rotation as a Fire Support Officer. My DD214 doesn't say anything about the deployment and lists no foreign service time, but it does show that I earned the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. I don't have the deployment orders, but I do have the award orders which indicate that the award is for participation in Operation Southern Watch (Intrinsic Action must've fallen under Southern Watch). Distribution list shows the units included (HHC, C, and D 1-12 are all listed). Attached is a Memorandum For Record that says "The following soldiers participated in Intrinsic Action from 19 Sept to 17 Dec, which are therefore authorized to wear the AFEM:" and it goes on to individually list the members of my tank unit (D Co, 1-67 AR). I also have an OER from the period that makes mention of my deployment. Do you have anything like this? They aren't deployment orders, but they could support your request and sufficiently establish your participation. Like I said, my DD214 doesn't mention the deployment either. I guess it never occurred to me that it should.

CPT Matthew Bradley - Your DD-214 should reflect service in Southwest Asia in block 18 (Shaded out block) and should say Service in Southwest Asia "Date" - "Date".

The classification periods listed above are:

Gulf War era - August 2nd, 1990 - present
Gulf War era - Gulf War. August 2nd, 1990 - January 31st, 1992.
Gulf War era (Deployed) Stabilization Operations Period. Feb 1st, 1992 - September 10th, 2001.
Gulf War era - Post 9/11 cohort (Including OIF) September 11th, 2001- present
Gulf War era - Non Deployed. August 2nd, 1990 - present.

Based on your deployment date and the classification under 38 CFR §3.317 your status should be - Gulf War Veteran (Deployed) Stabilization Operations Period.

If there were awards authorized for the period you served and are not listed on your DD 214 then you would have to apply for a Correction of Records.

All operations between 1 Feb, 1992 and 10 September 2001 in countries listed in the Southwest Asia TOO are Stabilization Operations Period regardless of whether there was shooting or not, operational status or not. It is the Stabilization Ops period.

If you are credited with an overseas tour it will be on your DA Form 2-1 and should say
Kuwait - AMEA (Africa-Middle East-Asia) "Date" - "Date". One thing I notice on mine was that even though we were there over five months, we were credited for exactly four months for an overseas tour. On the Enlisted or Officer Record Brief it will be under Section D (Tour Completed Status) and will be listed in section D2 Number of Short Tours.

Information on the AFEM will also be found on the Enlisted or Officers Record Brief in section E, subsection E3 (Awards and Decorations) and will say "Battle Expeditionary Campaign".

All of these records are available for download on VA Ebenefits if you use the VA and set up an account.

I don't know how you'd get that upgraded if you don't possess a copy of those orders. You can write to the records repository in St. Louis and ask them to check. They are pretty cool and do a god job. You were there when it was kind of like Ft. Irwin SW Asia branch. Got to take the MWR trips into Kuwait City for shopping at the gold souks.

Interesting you should say that. I was there in 1996 during Desert Strike, we never left the Desert and lived in sandbag bunkers, the PX was a tractor trailer. No ice, no internet, no TV, no radio, no nothing but sand, dirt, lizards, snakes and scorpions. Unlike the four times I was over there between 2004 and 2005. (Back and forth). So let me explain the difference between deployment in the 90's to Kuwait and deployment during OIF. Deployment during OIF to Kuwait included Camp Virginia for starters, PX, Internet Cafe, giant mess hall (During Intrinsic Action, Desert Strike and Southern Watch we had no messhall), people selling shit everywhere, and get this troops who served during "Ft Irwin SW Asia branch", they had gut trucks, Nathans Famous Hotdog trucks in the desert we could walk to right from our Camp. They would pull up, lines of troops getting hot dogs. Other things we didnt have in '96 that WE did when I was there in '04 and '05, Starbucks, Burger King, Subway, and no, we didnt get to go to any MWR trip, the one time they were going to take us back to the rear for one day (In nearly six months), Desert Strike started and we went Operational. We also didnt have any music room at a Palace in Kuwait City, we did on '04 and '05 though, I went there and played guitar myself, swimming pools, not in '96, unless you dug a hole and filled it with bottled water, in '04-'05 we had nice hot showers. In '96 we had a single metal shower for one person at a time sitting in a hole (drain) in the Desert, a truck would come out each day and fill the top with water, so everyone got exactly two minutes, unlike '04-'05 when we could take as long a shower as we wanted to. Lets not forget that there was NO MWR in the 90's, but there was definitely an MWR Office in '04-'05. For tours. There were no offices in the desert in '96, like there were in '04-'05. Of course Virginia was the tough part right? If you had wheels you could only go as far as ohhh. Ali Al Salem. Step on that base, which was not far from Virginia at all, you would think you never left the States. If you ended up someplace like Arafjan, same thing. I dont know, my opinion is different from yours, my opinion based on being there both times was being there in '04-'05 wasnt about shit. And I was a Coalition Forces Instructor in '04-'05, all branches and all Coalition countries. I know what Kuwait was like during OIF. It was like, not shit, that was what it was like. We lived on Tanks and in sandbag bunkers in '96, not air conditioned billets. No cell phones in '96. We had a phone bank in a tractor trailer that you got to use a phone for 15 minutes about every two weeks. Because an entire Brigade Task Force was using 6 phones and they were on one satellite. We had all kinds of cell phones during OIF, cheap ones, and email access, well we got to talk about how we couldn't wait to get home to use our computers, in December, while sitting in a bunker in August. I dont know, the way I remember it is completely backward from the way you describe it. And not everyone who was in Kuwait went north, meaning that Kuwait really wasn't OIF was it? Let me tell you, I was a Tank Platoon Sergeant in '96, and my troops had it 100 times harder than anything that went on in Kuwait in '04, '05 and on. you had everything, they didnt have shit. Before you put down some other troops service, you should think about the fact there were people there who served in Desert Storm, Stabilization Operations AND OIF. And plenty know the difference. I dont appreciate the BS, you say what you want to or about me, but my troops busted their ass in that Desert from July to December and the best they had was a deck of cards and one hot per day. And I am not going to accept that BS from someone who was in Kuwait in '03 and later acting like they did something hard and no one else did. And while I'm at it let me tell you about my LT. My LT slept for over five months in a 6x6 four foot tall sandbag bunker with an MRE box table. Why dont you tell us about your quarters? I'd like to see some photos.

I was there in from Aug - Mid-December 2016... We were the only Artillery Battery on the ground until old Sadam started acting up. Then they brought all our brothers in from teh 2/82 FA (Ft Hood). FUN Right! Anyway, I didn't get a copy of my orders either. Did this work for you?

You were more than likely on mass blanket orders if you went as a whole unit. Either contact the unit directly and see if they have records of that deployment on hand, or contact HRC and see if they can assist.
