Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke has requested the mobilization of the National Guard in the wake of violence that erupted in the City of Milwaukee late Saturday, August 13th and early Sunday, August 14th.
Clarke made the request after consulting with Gov. Scott Walker and Major Gen. Donald Dunbar of the Wisconsin National Guard.
Clarke said the following in a statement as part of a news release:
“We cannot allow for a repeat of what happened (Saturday) night. I am going to utilize all available resources to accomplish that.”
On Saturday night, violence erupted in the wake of an officer-involved shooting that happened near 44th and Auer on Saturday afternoon.
Protesters burned several stores, including the BP gas station at Sherman and Burleigh, Jet Beauty at 35th and Fond du Lac, BMO Harris Bank at 36th and Fond du Lac, O’Reilly Auto Parts at Fond du Lac and Burleigh and MJM Liquor at Fond du Lac and North — and threw rocks at police on the city’s north side, leaving one officer injured and three protesters arrested. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said protesters had been using social media to draw more demonstrators.

Funny how whenever someone calls for law and order or shutting down rioters they're a "right-wing nut job". How about this, we arm the business and home owners who are having their property destiryed by anarchists and promise them they won't be prosecuted for cleaning up their neighborhood should the rioters decide to of them a visit? That would be nuts. Trying to maintain order and prevent another Baltimore is good sense.

SGT Efaw (Mick) G. - the city is within his jurisdiction as the senior LEO in the county. He is an elected official, elected by all residents of the county. Even the people inside the city limits vote for sheriff. Being an elected official he does actually hold more "power" for a lack of better word, than an appointed official. The Chief of Police answers to the mayor. The sheriff answers directly to the people of his county. Not to a mayor, not to a governor (like the state police do).

As best as I can tell, Clarke talked to Walker and the WIARNG TAG and asked the Guard be put on alert. Which they were. Milwaukee PD requested tactical support from the MCSO (mounted patrol and K9), and it's been provided, all MCSO deputies are on alert, as are all MPD officers. I'm not sure what role Clarke is playing beyond this. I do know watching the news last night there were WIARNG Soldiers on the ground providing support for the LEOs. The governor can activate the guard without the request from the mayor or Chief of Police, if they believe there may be a need. They are the governor's militia. Maybe Clarke just brought up the concern after watching the shitshows in Baltimore and Ferguson and decided it might be a good idea to get out in front of it.

SGT Efaw (Mick) G. - I think if that assumption is being made it's because of the headlines being used. The Fox headline I found was Clarke talking to Walker, the CNN headline was about Clarke calling for their mobilization. He has involvement. There's no way a sheriff, any sheriff, would just hand over his mounted patrol and K9 unit without oversight. It may be administrative, it may be tactical. I don't know, and as it appears, neither does the media. As for the Guard, it's tough for them to be put into any LE role as it will be construed as martial law or reported as a violation of Posse Comitatus, even though it isn't. The hoopla over the military involvement during the Rodney King riots was over the top.

SP5 Christine Conley - Most likely. I've been called a liberal by my conservative friends and a right-wing nut by my liberal friends. I figure that's pretty good. I am a social liberal and a fiscal conservative. He made the comment. I responded in kind. His was a comment based solely in hyperbole and emotion. I figured he would be up for a debate but he blocked me instead. That's fine too.

YES! They are necessary. In 1967, when I went to Detroit for the riots, we were needed because the NG needed help. Today, unless the Reserves are called up, the NG is on its own. I wouldn't be surprised if the regular military is called. The rioters in Milwaukee are doing the same thing the rioters did in Detroit. They're looting, burning, and have taken Milwaukee over. The police can't do it by themselves, so the NG is needed.

SGT (Join to see) - Who in detroit saw a sniper shooting at them and then used the 50 cal to shoot from lower to higher in the building? Lots of people died that way to do recon by fire.

I heard the NG had a 50 cal taken from them by some protesters. I heard that a 2ndLT from the 82nd, drove a 3/4 truck to a warehouse where the 50 cal was located. After he pumped several rounds in the warehouse, the rioters gave up. I did hear a 50 cal being shot from somewhere in Detroit. I assumed it was the stolen 50 or the 2nd LT shooting. That's the only auto weapons fire I heard. When we pulled into Detroit, there were cars and pickups driving around with weapons sticking out the windows. The first thing we had to do was remove those weapons. There wasn't any resistance. With four or five M-16's pointing at them and an M-60 on the truck, they didn't give us any problems, thank God. Where did you hear the story about the 50 cal?

Sad to see this especially when the officers were attempting to take some bad guys off the streets COL Mikel J. Burroughs. On a side note, Sheriff Clarke is one of the best, if not the best law enforcement officers in the country. He is our friend. I'd love to see him run for President.
