Should I contact the Installation Commander? Security Forces Dormitory Airmen have been without hot water to shower for over two years.

I have been stationed at Ramstein AB for over 3 years now and there is a continuing concerning problem. Airmen are without hot water to take showers. They have have been told they can move to another dorm if they want hot water, or they need to use the gym. However there is limited availability in the other buildings and the vacancies in the substandard building just get refilled by newcomers. Security Forces leadership all the way to the top know about the problem but have failed to correct it for over two years. I know if I tell my leadership that I want to talk to the installation CC it will go very poorly but if I don't tell them then even worse things will happen. What can be done for these Airmen?

One night at Ft Hood I performed my Staff Duty Officer duties. Many arms room and motor pool checks. I had a SOP checklist and I wrote that dinner was not very good. I walked by the battalion barracks and noticed many soldiers outside at 10 PM. I asked if they were having a party, to which they replied, the AC was broken, and this was in August. I went into the building and it was 90 degrees plus in there. I wrote the deficiency down, and met with the battalion commander, to which he replied what the eff can I do about it. I was a little aghast at his message. Next day I see him leading the CG through the barracks and realized I had a leader who cared. We are still friends today.

When I was at Hood, Soldiers were sleeping out in their cars running the AC. Ridiculous.

TSgt (Join to see) If the chain of command is aware of it and has done nothing, they should be relieved. I suspect they have reported the problem but have not taken the necessary action to get it taken care of. Any commander worth his/her salt would be raising hell with the installation commander to get it corrected.
If you have, in fact, taken it up with your chain of command and nothing has been done about it, I would certainly see the Senior Enlisted person at the installation or the Installation Commander, the IG, or write my Congressman... or all of the above.

I agree you should take this to the shirt first and if nothing happens IG would be another option.

This would be the way to go, unfortunately, i assumed the 1st Shirt was professional but he had no business being a 1st Shirt, proceeded to use the system to make my life miserable instead of addressing the issue I brought to him...

Colonel I agree 100% with what You have said, I have seen Commanders relieved and usually that was the end of their career. I have seen one Commander the events were so bad a Congressional investigation team flew to the Base and the end result was they demanded He resign His commission and He was put out of the Service. Most Commanders are good leaders and look out for their troops but every once in a while someone arrives at that Command position that should not have. They never last !

I mean exactly what I said. He shouldn't be afraid of reprisal. Agree with you 100%. Some people in the chain of command get "butt hurt" if people go around them, and also some people are afraid to uphannel things, or don't know they can. I'm just reiterating the fact that if he's brought it up before and everyone knows about it then go to the next step. IG, Command Chief, Wing King, whoever. 2 years is a long time for an issue like that to be hanging out there. I'm sure there is more to the story than we know. If leadership doesn't know, they can't fix it. If they do know, then a reasonable explanation should be provided. For the last 6 years, I've been very fortunate to have very transparent and approachable leadership from the bottom to the top.

I have seen very heavy reprisals from "leaders" who were too incompetent to just do their job. The instant someone stresses an issue that the leader was supposed to have addressed or goes around them to report the issue, they target the subordinate do all kinds of reprisal.
Thru should go to the IG right away and establish a record to protect themselves from reprisal.

The IG would be a very good way to approach that in view of the failure of the unit to correct that. I've never seem a legitimate complaint taken to an IG that was not resolved It would be worth your time to speak to them. If anyone trys to take revenge against You for going to the IG they may have a lot bigger problem and if big enough it could end their career. Once the IG has You case they will follow up, that is one of the things they do all the time !
