Near the top, someone had scrawled, "Proverbs 29:16." The biblical verse reads: "When the wicked thrive, so does sin, but the righteous will see their downfall."
Black protesters said taking down statues is symbolic; the bigger fight against institutionalized white supremacy is longer, open-ended.

I live in Richmond and grew up here. I really have no stock in which statues are on monument. I feel there needs to be replacements for the ones they are taking down. Its hard to think about Monument ave. without statues on it. Having grown up here I have heard for years that a lot of the community wanted them taken down. I can't argue whether someone finds them offensive or not, I am not that person. Richmond does have a long history. Some good, some bad. That being said it IS our history. It needs to be taught that way.
Edited to note. While I "heard" about armed groups out protesting. I saw none of them myself, and heard of no acts of violence because of it. I think the media makes much more of these things than is absolutely necessary.
