Anyone at schofield barracks that works on wheeler army airfield or schofield that could provide some helpful insight on housing, amenities, or any other good information? Aviation personnel stationed there would also be great to hear from, thanks.

Lucky dog...I was unlucky enough to be chosen to PCS from Hawaii to Ft. Eustis. Hawaii (Schofield) was my fave duty station of my entire 21 year career. If I had the choice my wife and I would go back in a heartbeat. Cost of living is high but between BAH and COLA it's offset just fine. Schofield has some really nice on base housing just so long as you get the newer housing. Since you're coming from Eustis you know that they have the new housing across from TRADOC HQ then they have the old housing over across from the Royal Oaks (where the CG lives) and then over between McDonald and the shoppette. It looks like the same exact situation on Schofield. Same housing design and everything. It does rain pretty often on base since its in the higher elevation of Oahu. Pack away your winter PTs. You'll never need them. Wheeler is directly across the street from Schofield so they're basically the same thing. There are no base amenities (PX, gas station, MCSS) on Wheeler aside from a mini shopette and bowling alley because they're all located across the street on Schofield. But Schofield does have everything you'd ever need. For the outdoors enthusiasts it's a dream come true. Hiking is amazing, just be sure to take someone because some of the hikes can get pretty sketchy. Surfing, kite surfing, swimming at the plethora of beaches, ocean kayaking and outriggers is a blast. Personally I avoided Waikiki as much as possible because it's overcrowded and over priced but still something everyone needs to see. That's the only place on island you'll find any nightlife if that's something you're interested in. Luau's are so much fun. You HAVE to see the Polynesian cultural Center. Scuba diving is second to none. I earned my skydiving license on the north shore at Pacific Skydiving Center. Nothing like flying at 14,000 feet and jumping out of an airplane!

I used to be stationed in Hawaii, at the Naval Communications Station not too far from Schofield. Schofield does have some pretty nice base housing, though I chose to live in Navy housing.

Schofield also has a pretty nice and sizeable PX and commissary. The base itself is pretty huge and has pretty much anything a single or married service member could need.

LTC (Join to see) - Luckily I didn't live on NCTAMS! I lived in the housing complex at Pearl City Peninsula.

I currently live on NCTAMS after living on schofield for about four years. Small, quite, crime free and safe. I love it there.

I'm sure you do, but for those who are stationed at NCTAMS I know a lot don't want to live there!

My wife and I even discussed taking housing at NCTAMS but ultimately decided against it. Reason being, I would probably be the first one to get called into work on my days off given that I lived on base.

If you are married and have kids check the schools in the area. Those schools associated with the Oahu military bases and subsequently housing are usually pretty good. If you are told to find housing there is a big difference in quality. Check http://www.greatschools.org for more information. Enjoy the miles of beach!
