Has it benefited anyone? Does anyone know someone that has one of the certifications? I've been asking S1 reps about this program and no one knows what I'm talking about, much like when I asked about SRB (Soldier Record Brief) months ago.

I have held my SPHR certification since just before retiring and I think it was a primary factor in selection for two post Army jobs I have held. SHRM also has their own HR certification progrm and I just received that designation as well - time to update the resume. :)

How did you learn about it? What made you decide to pursue the certification?

I am not sure where I first learned about it, but I thought that obtaining the certification would benefit both my military career (Joint Staff at that time) as well a employment after retiring.

There are several way to prepare, but I aleady had a decent foundation in HR so I pucjased and completed a set of self study materials and then registered for an completed the test.

I took the HRCI Certification exam a little after I retired. I took a Certification prep class with the local SHRM Chapter and it was a big boost for my career. When I retired I had S1 experience and probably knew 60% of what corporate HR does, training, performance management etc. I couldn't spell COBRA, ERISA, FMLA, NLRA, etc. The new SHRM Certification is too new. I'd recommend the PHR or SPHR!

I have taken the PHR, it will do you no good in the military as it is a civilian certification program. This is normally taken by those nearing retirement and looming to pursue a job in HR in the civilian sector.
