Rangers: How many of you went to Ranger School? Who tried to go but didn't? Who is Ranger Qualified? How many are Airborne Rangers?

I know people think Rangers and those who are Ranger Qualified discriminate but the really good ones don't. I am just curious what the participation level is on this forum.
How many went to Ranger School? (Getting a slot is an achievement; going is commitment and respect even those who never were awarded the tab)
Who tried to go but didn't? (Preparing is also a commitment)
Who recycled, how many times and why?
Who is Ranger Qualified?
How many are Airborne Rangers?
I met alot of people I thought worthy, alot who tried but never got their and many who failed but were outstanding.

One of the worst days of my life was standing in front of the CO in a Darby hut and hear "341, you did not pass this phase. You're going to be a Darby Insert starting in 2 days."

That was me in the Mountains. When I was told that I didn't have to worry about another patrol in Florida that was the best day in my career.

I am Airborne and Ranger. I was recycled in the Mountains. I think I cried. I finished on friday and started mountains again on saturday. It was rough. I got a slot while in the National Guard. I just about had to kill someone for it. I can say that I am a better officer for it. I was prior service and learned a lot.
I do prefer Ranger qualified soldiers. I was in a unit in the past where all NCOs were Ranger qualified. I have yet to see any other unit were the overall quality of soldiers were on par. When you tell a Ranger he has to go the extra mile he will go. He knows he can. He knows it could be worse. He could be in benning again.

I disagree with SFC John Gates that you have to have been assigned to the Ranger Regiment to be a Ranger. People awarded the Ranger Tab upon completion of Ranger School are Rangers.

SGT Christopher Kirkpatrick - So, does that mean that, if you stay in the Army and are reassigned to an assignment outside of the Ranger Regiment, you are no longer a Ranger? As far as the Army is concerned, once awarded the Ranger Tab, you are a Ranger, regardless of the unit of assignment. Do you still identify as a Ranger now that you are no longer in the Army?
It appears that, by your definition, a non-Ranger cook, for example, assigned to the Ranger Regiment, is a Ranger, whereas an Infantry man who has been awarded the ranger Tab but is assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division is not. That is simply ludicrous...
I don't think a separate MOS is needed to identify self-absorbed prima donnas... They are already obvious.

SGT Christopher Kirkpatrick - What I am saying is that once you are awarded the Ranger Tab, you are a Ranger. Being assigned to a unit and going on operations does not make you a Ranger if you have not been awarded the Tab. It make you a member of the unit.
The "proof" you offer is old history, before the Army officially designated the criteria to be a Ranger ... that is graduation from Ranger School and being awarded the Ranger Tab. Once again, I'll ask ... If a Ranger or non-Ranger assigned to the Ranger Regiment leaves the Regiment for another assignment or leaves the Army, is he still a Ranger??
And, to address your MP comment, I attended Ranger School as an Infantry officer. I was also assigned to the Ranger Department as an Infantry officer, not as an MP. I became an MP after being injured and disqualified for combat arms. I was a Ranger as an Infantry officer... I was a Ranger as an MP officer... and I am a Ranger today as a retired Army officer. Your opinion about that is interesting, but not really pertinent to the truth or facts.

Gentlemen, As there is no regulation as to who is an "Army Ranger", I defer to one of the greatest CSM's in the the 75th Ranger Regiment, CSM Mellinger. Anyone making it through RASP and being awarded the Tan Beret to serve in the 75th Ranger Regiment is considered a "Ranger", Ranger tab or not. All others completing the school are merely Ranger Qualified. Just as those that make it through the basic airborne course. If you are not assigned to an airborne unit, you are not considered a paratrooper. Having served in C/2/75th (RGR), I agree with the good CSM. This is also the opinion of those that continue to serve in the Regiment.

LTC Edward Clark So, using your rationale, if you are an Infantry officer assigned to Recruiting Command, ROTC, Army Staff, Joint Staff, attending the Army War College, or any number of branch immaterial assignments (not assigned to an Infantry unit), you are not an Infantry officer, only “Infantry qualified”. Right?
