Hello RallyPoint, hope everyone is doing well. With the possibility of signing up with an Option 40 in my future, I couldn’t help but be curious as to which is more of a gut check or which is truly slightly more difficult. I understand that RASP gains entrance into the Regiment and that RS gains you the Tab. I also understand that RASP teaches you how to be a ranger and RS teaches you more to be a leader, but with that I gotta ask, which do you believe was truly more arduous, RASP or Ranger School? Some say RS because you actually have to lead, some say RASP due to it being more of a gut check. I look forward to the wisdom you all impart and hope you are all doing well.

Don't sign up for option 40. Also, your idea of RASP and Ranger School are completely incorrect. Since you have already read up on it and have come to the wrong conclusion, it would be a waste to explain it to you. However, once you get into the Army you will have a better understanding of the difference between the two.
Pick a job you want to do. If you want to be a Ranger, pick 11B with Airborne School. That should not be hard to get. In Airborne school you will get recruited to go to RASP. You will probably fail or quit, 90% of the Option 40 kids do. But that's ok. You tried something that most people only talk about. If you are Infantry you will get the opportunity to go to Ranger School as long as you are a solid performer. Just do you job and do it competently.

I didn’t know you could actually PICK 11B, thought the contract was only titled 11X since the Army gets to decide your specific MOS during reception. And with all due respect Sergeant, I don’t plan to do my job competently, I plan to excel at it, no matter what, cause anything less would be spitting not just in the Army’s face, but my own as well. Again, with the utmost respect, Sergeant.

Jake Lang you do get assigned as 11X the 11B segment exponentially outnumbers the 11C segment so by picking Infantry your almost guaranteed to be an 11B. If you become an 11C it's easy to switch later on since you're trained as an 11B first before going into 11C training.

For me, Ranger school was easier than Ranger Indoctrination Program (RIP), because at the time I had never done anything difficult so my perception was that RIP was the hardest experience. By the time I got to Ranger school I had already experienced difficult training so it was relative. If you are coming off the street, I believe Ranger school would be more didficult.

Understood Sergeant Major, last question if I may, since I am getting my bachelor’s soon within the year and enlisting as an E-4, would that then make me more likely to go to Ranger School even with a 3 year contract if I went with an Option 4 or Option 40 contract?

SFC (Join to see) - They were RIP ing all the Infantry Officers when I went through IOBC back in the 80's. Since it was one of the last big things we did before end of cycle, we didn't hit the hand to hand and land nav stuff and it was just a bit over 2 weeks long. Still, I was about 168 and maybe 10 percent body fat and I till lost about 8 pounds and it was one of the most physically exhausting things I have every done. The last problem was an Air Assault and the mission went well and quick. We got orders to hump out to a pickup point to meet the trucks, only about 8 K on map, no problem for guys that had been doing a lot of humping the last 4 months. About klick 2, we hit the creek bottom and slogged through those bayous, meanders, swamps or whatever you want to call them for the next 4 hours. Then when all the patrols were back, they decided we need some PT. That just about finished most of us, then we got to run the Darby Queen. All I can remember thinking was that if this was the pace of Ranger School, I don't understand how anyone lived through it.

CPT Lawrence Cable lol yep that sounds like Ranger School. I started at 165 and finished at 135. Most of us looked like walking zombies by the time we graduated.

Ranger school was 56 days of hell to get your tab. Since I was with the 1st 75th Rangers before school I wasn't a Ranger till I had the tab. Being in special ops it's not supposed to be easy it prepares you for life or death. God bless my fellow warriors and God bless America..Rangers lead the way
