Because while you are there you are only known as "Ranger." Everyone is treated the same and is expected to pull their weight. I aid in training soldiers going to Ranger school and am a certified RI. I have seen a BN CSM go to Ranger School after going to a Pre-Ranger. When there he was treated the same as anyone else. If you don't do that you could have an Officer or CSM try to force another soldier to work beyond their expectation.

Usually most Ranger students figure out pretty quickly everyone else's ranks. But its a big SO WHAT. It's natural to talk to others during limited downtime about what schools they have gone to and so forth. But what that rank is was left in the barracks on the first day. And it should be that way. Ranger Class 6-73.

LTC Patrick Turner - Indeed. No one cared what rank you are. If that were the case peers would fix that. The last thing I worried about was if someone knew I was an officer.

Cynthia Croft - There is a Ranger Regiment where just about all have to go to Ranger school. Then others like myself return to their unit with the experience they gain. It's a leadership school but it's heavy on infantry tactics. Little sleep and food then you have to lead patrols. I lost 30 pounds there.

When you're in school, there's no rank. Only roster numbers. When you graduate, it's only the Tab. Students tend to stay in the student uniform until the graduation is over and change into normal clothes.

Went to a Ranger graduation once. Beautiful spring day, wind blowing almost froze to death. Outstanding program with many back that failed in the pass. Swears they will pass that time. They were the incoming class assisting people with parking etc. All very cheerful and happy to be seen. No bragging, just wanting to pass. Super nice group of young men. Met the BO CO and was a super nice person. Thanked me for my service and told me to enjoy my years for i had done my share. Sure made a vet happy that day.

There was rank in Airborne school but company grade officers were treated exactly like enlisted in all training. Field Grade Officers got what we called the "Gentleman's Course," that is, they came out and did every event but got no harassment. I was a Captain and platoon leader in airborne school. The company commander, the other platoon leader and me had our own dedicated Black Hat who made sure we never missed any harassment or training.

As I understand it, (no, I am not a ranger, but served with many) every one is a maggot until graduation, just because you are an LT or CPT even, you get 0 perks in class, EVERYONE is going to lead patrols, everyone is going to give briefings, and usually with about 10 seconds notice, everyone is hungry and sleep deprived so that everyones brain is the same level of mush. now you get to perform and get critiqued equally. It is about teaching responsability to self, and to the team.

I didn't know they did that but I guess it levels the field and puts everyone in the same level for learning and mastering the skills that are needed.

SMSgt Lawrence McCarter - Exactly the point, which is why Ranger School is touted as the best leadership school in the world, I have heard that from our guys of course, but from other nations troops who also get to sometimes vie for a slot. A few countries that I have been to, I have been told that that is the cherry class everyone wants is FT Benning advanced school for boys (now girls as well)
