Well, that is truly inspiring! Great job and great example CSM Fortenberry set. I am surprised that soldiers have to buy gear themselves for the course. Is that normal, or is that buying something different than what the Army provides? It would seem that the Army should provide all that you need...

Nope, it is very normal. We were provided with a list of what would be issued and what was suggested. No big deal, as far as I was concerned Ranger school was an investment in myself as a soldier, officer and man. I still fall back on the lessons I learned back in the '80's.

"I had to be able to look Soldiers in the face, and they had to know that I faced every challenge they did, whether that's going home and telling your wife 'I'm about to go to Ranger School' or sacrificing pay for equipment."

He didn't say that as a sergeant, staff sergeant, SFC or 1SG? Plus an E-9 has much less $$ sacrifice paying for 'gear' than a SGT.

This is why I will always claim the 10th as my unit. It was my first duty station in 1988, just as the 2nd was coming on line. Hard times a lot of training, but it trained me to do thing I did not do every day, I was a 63B, but we where held to 11B standers on field site set up.
