I was looking at the RMC Calculator in the Army website and checked my rank just outta curiosity and it said that they would pay you like 30k in gross up but I don’t really remember getting paid that much as a Cpl in the Corps.

The gross up is just a word used on the website calculator to show what the combination of that rank, years of service, etc has in terms of tax-free payments (housing and food) plus the taxes you would have supposedly paid if they were taxable income added to your base pay gross.

No, gross up is an additional amount of money added to a payment to cover income taxes. The Army website says that they provide an additional gross up amount to your base salary to cover taxable income

For example a CPL with 4 years makes $30,664 as a base salary, the website says that the CPL would get an extra gross up amount of $28,365 to cover the tax deductions giving him a $2,836 tax advantage. SPC Onel Cruz

SPC Onel Cruz I went to the website and say what your talking about. I've never gotten anything more than base pay and allowances. I think the gross up in this instance is what you would he paying taxes on if your allowances were taxed.

It's a hypothetical number. It's the amount that you would have to receive in pre-tax income to equal your tax free income. For instance, say your BAH is $1200, and you receive $14400 for the year in tax free income. If your tax rate is 12% you would have to earn $16363 in pre-tax income in the civilian sector to equal the $14400 tax free value.
