We AreFermilab is America’s premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and South Dakota and at locations around the world, including Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and the South Pole.
The SQMS Center was established by the National Quantum Initiative Act as a hub in a new cooperative ecosystem built from national labs, universities, and leading companies. The mission of the SQMS Center is to build revolutionary new quantum science platforms that exploit superconducting radio frequency cavities and superconducting qubits for quantum information science (QIS) in the area of quantum computing, quantum sensing and quantum physics experiments.
Fermilab’s Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems (SQMS) Center and Division seeks a Mechanical Engineer (3-year term) to join the Quantum Microwave Systems Department. The department supports and develops test facilities, facilities mechanical and cooling components, instrumentations, controls for the project needs of both QIS and fundamental physics research. Under general direction, the successful candidate will plan and perform engineering tasks, including research, design, and development of small to medium engineering projects or portions of large projects in compliance with all applicable local, state and federal regulations, requirements and standards, and all DOE orders. In addition, the position will support the installation and operation of test stands and test stand components operating across a wide range of temperatures.
You Will
Work in a collaborative environment of people with a wide variety of backgrounds, experience, and ideas
Participate in all aspects of engineering and operations related to QIS and other experiments at ultralow cryogenic temperatures.
Produce drawings, analyses, engineering reports, procedures, and presentations
Review and approve work before hardware and financial commitments are made to ensure conformance to specifications and cost and time constraints
Provide technical direction to draftspersons, designers, engineering associates, and technicians as assigned to specific projects
Oversee preparation, installation and operation of test setups, test stand, and associated components and equipment
