Despite negative press, this is part of what the VA is for. If you develop health issues even years after a deployment it doesn't hurt to come to the VA to get it evaluated for a potential service connection.

PatientsLikeMe (PLM) recently spoke at a VFW training event for their Service Officers. The majority of the Service Officers in attendance said they have personally met veterans who were unaware of services the VFW provides in filing VA claims. They said it becomes difficult at times to prove service connection. Some have started to use PLM's free tracking tools to help prove their case.

I think in my case it was the things we brought in country to change the environment,Agent Orange ,although so far I haven't had too many bad things affecting my health from exposure to said chemicals according to the VA ,my ,advise to current Service-members is to make sure all your health issues are documented, dated and signed before leaving ,seems the VA finds great store in paper work, and finally good luck Brothers on the current "Burn pit" issues.you will need it!

PatientsLikeMe (PLM) hears more and more interest, from our veteran service organization partners, about burn pits, proximity to, and how long the exposure lasted. There is something here & more SMs & veterans will need to add their voice to this research. Your experiences matter.

With all of the wonderful places that I was stationed/TDY to I'm not sure how much it impacted it but I'm sure that it didn't help it any either.
