4 July 1802: The U.S. Military Academy at West Point begins operations with Col. Jonathan Williams of the Corps of Engineers as superintendent. The first class graduated that October led by Joseph Gardner Swift. Swift returned to serve as the fourth superintendent from 1812-14.
