I am thinking of reclassing to some form of combat arms, does anyone know any aviation reclasses in their unit?

So you are wanting to reclass from aviation into a combat arms field? I did have some (a few guys) who were prior aviation mechanics, Air Force and Navy guys who were in my last company when I last served. The answer they always gave when asked why they joined the Infantry was the chance of promotion is higher. Now if joining the Infantry is to ensure you promote quickly then you may want to reconsider. Infantry is a field where getting the wrong end of the stick is common place. So if you are ready to undertake the many miserable situations where supplies may be lacking and the stressors will be high then do it. The best things about the Infantry are the comradery you will develop, the ability to know you can overcome any obstacle in life and a sense of pride that can never be taken from you.

There is not one moment of my infantry career that I regret except. Not re-enlisting and staying in until I couldn’t walk anymore. I miss those guys every damn day of my life. And I would kill and be killed for 98 percent of the men I served with. If that’s what you’re looking for in your military career. Infantry is the way to go. If you are just doing it for promotion or because you’re trying to be cool. Stay where you are. People who go infantry for the wrong reasons never last long.

PFC (Join to see) - Never feel as if you haven't done enough. We all have a part to play in peace time and war time situations. Living with some form of regret will only nullify the work and sweat you put in. Be proud of your part and know that you were a part of something bigger than yourself.

SPC Derek Vallery - Well said Derek, the bonds we form with each other are almost always stronger than the bonds we have with our own siblings. And yes there are those who join the Infantry to "be cool" but almost always can't hang and get booted out. This I have seen on more than one occasion.

I started out in the Navy, and joined the Army after my first hitch. I went infantry in the National Guard. Even in the Guard, being in the infantry, has its moments of "what the fuck was i thinking." However, I wanted to shoot shit and blow shit up, things i did not get to do in Army aviation, or the Navy. If you think being in the infantry means you will always see combat, that is not true. Seeing combat, is a bit of luck. It just comes down to being in the right unit at the right time. My National Guard unit replaced the 82nd airborne in Iraq, and we did not have any real "fire fights" at our fobs, just got mortared a but ton.

So, my suggestion is stay in the Army till you have your twenty, then you can make a better decision.

Everyone thinks being a civilian is easier, it is not. It is harder to be a civilian, and you have to gross twice what you do in the army in order to live the way you live in the Army. that 50% pension makes civilian life way easier, use your time wisely, if you can get your civilian certs (not sure what you mean by that), then do it, then work part time at a local airfield as a mechanic to get your reapirtmen's certificate (you need a recommendation form a civilian repair station for this). Do your twenty, and use the experience you have both military and civilian to find a job.
