To further clarify, do you believe that the Army should institute Drill Sergeant Duty at Army installations?

He is the reason for my questions:

When I was an Active Duty Sergeant, I was appalled at the loss of discipline for soldiers that arrived in my company and in my squad. When I say lack of discipline, I am talking complete utter lack of discipline, the kind that deserves a butt stoke to the head. It became very apparent to me that TRADOC teaches and ENFORCES (key word here) military standards of discipline, however regular Army NCO's do not have the same standards of discipline, knowledge, and enforcement capability.

Do you think that the Army should put a Drill Sergeant detachment on every installation for two reasons:

1. To provide refresher training (min-boot camps) to those troops that are 8-up.

2. To enfore the standards, and to force other Sergeants to enfore the standards.

I don't know, I figure that every Sergeant in the Army should be trained to act as a Drill Sergeant all the time in both conduct and performance.

Even NCO's need a little kick in the butt sometimes.

What say you?

All NCOs and Officers need to enforce Standards. Drill Sergeants are for training Soldiers in IET/BCT. The vast majority of Senior NCOs in all of my units have been former Drill Sergeants... That is why all of my units were kick ass. I disagree that regular Army NCOs don't have the same capability... Being a Drill Sergeant is a job, being a professional NCO is a state of mind. What are you thinking?

Maybe it’s time for a revisit to pme (pro mil ed) class for an attitude
adjustment. It appears that is what is needed. If that doesn’t take hold
Demote them and the leadership should tell them that “they have lost confidence in that person’s ability to lead”, that’s why they are being demoted. Also, is there s’thing missing at the top... Leadership? It has to start there.
How are the NCOs supposed to Lead when those at the top don’t take an interest at what is going on
On TDRL street level. Can’t just be an Arm chair leader need to get out among the troops. That’s my input.

Absolutely agree Sir, and therein lies the problem, we have Soldiers who are disrespectful and NCOs and Officers who either don't know hot to do on the spot correction or are too afraid of the repercussions of treating the Soldier too "harsh", or the ever prevailing, "you're not in my chain of command".
I've had an aneurysm recently seeing an active duty E4 at Ft. Bliss outside of PX with no head gear letting his dog do the business, and not one, not two, but 3 different NCOs walked by him and said nothing. So my old NCO brain kicked in and I had to correct him. Kid's excuse was, oh yeah sorry Sir I left it in the car, and then just proceeded to stand there. So I "politely" instructed him to go to his car and get it as my eyes burned a hole in his skull.

I feel that Drill Sergeants should only be for Basic Training. If you start using Drill Sergeants for ensuring the level of discipline maintains than why should we even have a NCO Corp. I feel that if lower enlisted are losing their bearing than they should be corrected on the spot by any higher ranking individual in a professional way, that is why we have general military authority.

I had a response for all this, but after looking at your profile, I digress. Your not in the Army, thank you for your time but unless your coming back in, these views are A outdated as things have changed since 96-05 and B barely helpful for the progression of the Army or the Corps. This is proven by the survey question to begin with.

I was in a more relaxed Army of the early '80's. NCO's and Officers were pretty chill..so long as you were doing your duty. Screw up and you heard about it, even if that meant UCMJ. But otherwise, it was a chill scene.

I had lunch at the PX today and saw a private walking around with her bun sloppy and falling out. I told her it was falling out and received a blank stare and a flat "thank you." Burned me, but I was with my family so I did not make a scene. My Soldiers know better, and show it every day. They are a reflection of my leadership, just like every other soldier is a reflection of theirs. They don't need a DS, because no one is more professional than I.

I see how it is easy to read a few short sentences and immediately chastise. I could have stood there and demanded results that very second, but that is not me. While I know individuals that need that sort of supervision, I do not know this one. She could be a great Soldier that didn't have a clue she was out of regs, and immediately when to to the latrine to police that bun. Am I to stand there and oversee the entire process? Should I disrespect that Soldier and just immediately assume she is in need of babysitting? Should I have my family sit there and wait for her to go and fix it, then have me approve it? I believe in picking my battles. The juice was not worth the squeeze, no, not to me.

And Id say you made a good choice..
Made the correction, and non safety related as it was, then moved on. The SM either took it to heart and corrected it, or not..
If they needed to be forced, all you would have solved is a symptom not the issue...and that needs to be solved by her supervisors to be effective.
