Should a Sergeant First Class in the Duty Position of 1SG be referred to as his/her rank or the Duty Position they are filling?

CSM Eric Olsen - Good evening. I am confused about your reply to me about giving SGM Cunningham a thumbs down? I thought maybe I made a mistake and looked at the comments above and I actually gave a thumbs up to SGM Cunningham so am confused about your reply. I am professionally disagreeing with SGM Cunningham and agreeing with you on this discussion and I am sure SGM Cunningham will professionally disagree with me on my response which is perfectly fine with me. BTW, SGM Cunningham and I are friends as well and have known him for years as a great battle and a wonderful person who is always helpful and knows his stuff. Sorry for any confusion but I actually gave him a thumbs up above on his comment to you 2 comments above. Have a great week.

1SG Thomas Jasak I was just joking, it was more like saying boooooo to my friend's answer because he's an MI Guy. No worries and sorry for the confusion.

I would have to respectfully disagree with SGM Cunningham. If the SFC is in the duty position and they are his Soldiers or Soldiers from within the unit that know he/she is serving as a 1SG of what if the units should refer to the SFC as 1SG. If he/she is somewhere else on the installation and the Soldiers do not personally know the SFC is serving as a 1SG, then they should say Sergeant.

I meant one of the units, not what if the units.

Your reasoning is exactly why I disagree with you. His troops should give respect the position he is serving under but his title is still the same and this will keep any confusion out if they are on another base or something like that. His authority is not taken away because he is called by his proper rank

Perhaps I am going to surprise some folks yet in my view it is critical to recognize that”First Sergeant “, while a rank is “most” importantly a position or role that is incredibly unique in terms of both form and function. It is disrespectful to the unit, the soldiers not to recognize the warrior selected to be their Top Kick as First Sergeant. The Air Force figured this out and one can be a First Sergeant as an E-7, E-8, or E-9. If an SFC/PSG is perceived worthy to be selected to serve as a First Sergeant, cut the bs, recognize the warrior for his role. Airborne

In respect to what you are saying, it should be changed to associate the position with the word and not the rank. After all the e8 tank has two titles master Sargent and first Sargent. I don't understand why they don't just make it a title for the position and get it away from a particular rank

That is exactly what the USAF does, the diamond is added regardless if E-7, E-8, or E-9.

I was a MSG for 13 months filling in a 1SG, then actually was given the Diamond. USAF aside, with all due respect, an Army 1SG is not the same job as an USAF first shirt. If you are desiring to make CSM you might want to put on the diamond first, its sorta the "command line". I guess it depends on what unit you are 1SG of and the MOS, but my guess is that if just slapping a Diamond on any SFC-SGM that the CSM and LTC thought could fill the role then we would have some fairly crappy 1SG's out there. Not everyone steps up to wear the Diamond. IMHO the Army 1SG might be the most respected rank in the Army. SGM and CSM are very respectable, but chances are they love it if they were a 1SG, too. I am blessed that the Gods saw fit to retire me with that Diamond still on my chest.
