I have been handed a contingent DLITE offer that is OCONUS. The contract is for a year. It appears that my safest choice is to go into the IRR. I would like to return as a TPU once my contract is up; better yet I want to become an officer. Can I apply for Direct Commission as a reserve officer while I am in the IRR? Provided, of course, I find a until with a para and line number that is willing to accept me as an LT. I do realize that my aspirations are indefinite (pending a board approval) but is it possible for HRC to accept this?

The short answer is "Yes." The IRR is considered a part of the "active reserve" (just roll with it, I know that the I stands for Inactive... that said, your time still counts). You are just as eligible as if you were in a TPU unit. I don't know how likely it is, or if the time in the IRR would hurt you (not as current as peers? does it matter?), etc. But if you would qualify to submit a packet as a TPU, you will qualify as IRR.

I am prior service. Can I go to a recruiter and just asked to be put in the IRR for this very reason? I dropped out at the 8 year mark. I have been out for three years.

SFC: Not gonna throw any retention NCO under the bus but I was told that there were no info for FY 16's board around August 2015. Perhaps that's true but now I have been deployed as a contractor overseas since December 2015. If there was an ODA interview board in January 2016, I missed it.

I'm sure there is probably board information for FY 2017. Problem is: there is no retention NCO where I currently am. I still would like to direct commission. Can you help me? I know that at some point I have to travel and meet for an interview board. I can plan accordingly.

That is a great question SGT (Join to see). Do you have a bachelors degree or higher degree in something that the military could use after your are commissioned?

Don't wait. The process takes almost a year so start now and let it run its' course while you are overseas

SGT (Join to see) - Depending of type of IMA, drilling or non-drilling, you are talking 12-14 days or 29 days of AD, not MUTA pay, per year. Drilling I think you do two days per month and then the AT period.

COL (Join to see) - Sounds great, sir. So for now I am pretty much looking at either 09L or 37F as an IMA (E6). I searched (HRC) and found a position as a 37F. Are you inferring that I should initiate the packet for IMA as soon as I am on IRR status then apply for a ODC when I am picked up as an IMA?

Put your appointment packet in asap regardless of status. Status doesn't matter. Transferring as an IMA is as simple as a TPU to TPU. Just initiate a 4651-R
