Raney was born in Suffolk, Va., Jan. 10, 1912. A graduate of the Lincoln Hospital School of Nursing in Durham, N.C. Approximately 500 black nurses served in the ANC during World War II. Raney was promoted to captain in 1945. After the war, she was assigned to head of the nursing staff at the station hospital at Camp Beale, Calif. Raney retired in 1978 as major.
