I actually started laughing when I looked at this article. Why? Because it's so true and the powers to be in DA haven't figured it out. They had the same issues when they were down at the company level but as they ascended in rank, they forgot about it.
As a infantry captain with over 50 months of company command time, I can be honest and say that there are times that I had to choose over training events that would actually mean something, like tactical combat care, instead of mandated 350-1 training. Why? Because the tactical combat care training could/would save someones life in combat while another power point class wouldn't. It becomes even more insane when they expect you to stand down from combat operations to conduct 350-1 training just so they can report numbers to higher.
It's unfortunate that the Army has become so bogged down and has taken so much time away from commanders and NCOs with so much mandated training instead of giving us that time to do something that will make our units more lethal, combat ready and develop our junior leaders.

It trickles down, too, Sir. It's been this way since long before Powerpoint was even a thing. I can't tell you how many times I had situations like a squad full of new privates who could barely read a map or figure out where to be in a team/squad formation, but had useless training or activities dictated by higher that took time away from teaching & reinforcing things as basic and meaningful as this.

This is why such old concepts as "never walk past a deficiency" don't actually work in practice.

If we peel the layers off the onion and accept the fact that military forces are about killin' people and breakin' stuff (or enabling and facilitating same), and NOT social experiments, then maybe we can eliminate these ludicrous standards.

Because a standard that cannot be met IS NOT a standard.
