Should I ship now or wait?

I'm shipping out for basic in 9 days. Not overweight & I've been working out for the past few weeks but I'm terrified of failing the APFTs. Secondly, I have a BS but not a citizen. Had I known, I'd have waited to become a citizen on my own & then apply for AMEDD officer. If I don't ship out now & apply for AMEDD when I'm a citizen, am I ruining my future chances bc I did not ship out this time?

I'm not sure what your current status is with the naturalization process, but military service can greatly accelerate the process. It may be a faster route to gain citizenship through military service and then seek a commission.

What is your BS in? If it’s something that you would only qualify for 70B then I would say do your enlisted contract and gain the experience then when it’s time to ETS apply for direct commission. The experience as enlisted will only make you a valuable officer candidate for AMEDD. Good luck in BCT. You will be fine. They will get you in shape!

BS in engineering, MS in biology. I meant to type MS in the post. I qualify for 71E and that's what I'd like to do as an officer.
I've read so many different things and watched so many different videos online. Some are optimistic and say it's okay if you're not 100% ready going into basic and the army will get you ready while others call you unworthy for shipping out without being ready for it. Needless to say such posts or videos can make you optimistic or terrify you. I guess I should just stop reading or watching anything else until I ship out.

Yeah until you get citizenship you could not direct commissioning as 71E in AMEDD. I would complete my enlisted contract and get the experience and also get your citizenship squared away while serving and then when you are nearing the end of your contract you can direct commission as 71E. You will actually get more pay as an officer because you will get the officer pay with the E factor for the number of years you serve as enlisted so you would be like 0-1E4 in terms of pay. It will also like I said will make you more attractive to the board when applying to become an officer in AMEDD. You will be fine in BCT. You just have the last minute jitters like everyone does.

I didn’t go to BCT, but you can bet having no prior experience with the army when I was heading to my direct commissioning course I was nervous too. It ended up being a wonderful experience and I look back on things that happened and things I did and experienced and I just laugh and enjoyed it all.

Just remember everyone who going to BCT with you is feeling exactly what you’re feeling whether they admit it or not and everyone will be going through the same training. You’ll make battle buddies and you won’t be alone. It’s going to be fine. Joshua Obenauf

MAJ (Join to see) Yes, last minute jitters for sure. I think I'll be fine once I get there because there will be others just like me going through the whole experience. I've heard nothing but great things about basic from those who have been and they all said they look back, cherish the memories and laugh about it now.
As far as commissioning as AMEDD officer, I was under the impression that I could do it as soon as I have my citizenship provided my company/platoon is willing to release me. If I have a choice then I do not plan on waiting out 70 to 80% of my enlistment contract duration before I can commission and am hoping to have commissioned around when I reach the halfway point of my 4 year enlistment contract. I guess I'll see how things pan out.

Don’t let fear lead your life. We all fail. Go as planned and do the work. They know what they are doing. You can do everything you want from inside the military. Don’t let fear drive your decisions or fear of failure. Get used to it and keep Getting up, Brush off the dirt and continue.
