Training's impact on the skill of a pilot is hard to overstate. Historical allegories include Hitler's decision to lower training requirements for new pilots in order to produce more of them...and eventually throwing his instructor pilot cadre into the fight. He never recovered even local air superiority after that. This was our edge over the Soviets in the 80, and over everyone (except the Isaelis) in the 90s. Our never-ending fight of drilling holes in the skies over Afgh and Iraq/Syria actually HARMS readiness because there are never even simulated high-end threats. Here's hoping Trump & Mattis get more O&M funding.

Once the magic F-35 comes out in production we won't need to be able to dog fight. Heck we don't even need guns on these things. We can just shoot them down 4 miles out with missile shots. Sound familiar???

Yes, very. The gunless F-4 and the drop in kill ratios in Vietnam defined the gaps for the F-15/F-16 combo (with guns), Red Flag, and training hours.

This isn't prevention vs. cure. This is survival and an edge in a fight vs. the deaths of the people our aviation supports

Yes PO2 Meghan Gilliat. I'm so happy you see that. If we lose the air war, our men and women on the ground are in for some very rough times.
