Can a Soldier switch branches while being barred for re-enlistment in the Army?

I have a Soldier that’s barred for re-enlist lent due to failing a PT test but is wanting to switch branches to the Air Force. Will he be able to switch branches while barred?

A Soldier can't switch branches at all. You have to ETS and then go join another branch. If the recruiter told them they could switch or "Just get this conditional release signed", it's a lie. If that Soldier separates flagged or with a bar they will receive an RE3 code and require a waiver to go into whatever branch they're trying to get into.

SFC James J. Palmer IV aka "JP4" I should have said active duty. Reserves you can get a conditional release to go active. But for active enlisted, not indef, you have to ETS or be chaptered.

This has Retention NCO written all over it. That is the person I recommend this Soldier talk to. My initial instinct is to say that this can't happen. SFC (Join to see), is this possible?

I've been retired for quite sometime now and back in the '80s' & '90', a Bar meant that an individual was unfit for military duty so the answer to your question would have been No, you couldn't transfer. Upon ETS with a Bar to Reenlistment in effect, the commander signing the bar also had to assign an RE code and if it were 3 or 4, the person's military career was over. I have no idea if this has changed. Good luck.
