When you transitioned out of the Military:

Were you willing to relocate to start a new career?
Or, were you dedicated to one location and finding a career there?

Why?

I was willing, ready and "supposed" to move, but when I was told 3 months before PCS, instead I was going to PCS to the Sergeants Major academy (permanent party) instead of to Ft. Bragg, I asked the SGM Branch Manager what happened to the SGM that was supposed to PCS to the Academy, I was told he boss (1 Star) at PERSCOM wanted to keep him for another year. So I asked how long had he been there...and was told 4 yrs. My immediate reply was, "Tell that SOB to pack his bags, I'll retire before go to Fort Biss, as I was returning back from a short tour in Korea. My wife was in the Air Force and going to Langley AFB, Va.

Branch didn't want to change it, (i think they did not believe I would give up the stripe, beingpromoteable, not yet promoted to SGM). But I meant every word of it and they had my retirement papers 10 days later. I had not played the political assignement and good ole boy games during my career and I was not about to start doing it as a new, no time in grade SGM.

So I went from an E8 Promotable to an Retired USAF Dependent 3 months later. Still miss it, but no regrets and no looking back! But.............would go back tomorrow if called!

SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL Congrats on the upcoing retirement. You picked a great area! We lived in Hampton when my wife was stationed at Langley from 96-99, after I retired from the Army. We would have stayed but we had the opportunity to go back to Europe and no way were we turning that down. We last visited the Area for the 11th ACR Reunion in Williamsburg a couple years ago and got to visit with close friends who have retired there as well. Love the area, but man, the traffic sure has grown as well...too much for me! Good luck to you and your family..wishing you the best.

We had to evacuate for one when we were there. We went to DC for 4 days and upon return our side of the apartment complex (facing West, not toward the coast) was fine, but a couple trees had been blown thru the walls of several apartments on the other side.

I can still relate with that hurricane issue..we're 20 miles off the coast here at Ft. Stewart. But the other problem is, with my job as EOC coordinator and Em. Manager...I'm one of the dummies who stays to ride out the storm after we send everyone else packing! Just doesn't sound to smart to me....the things we do for ....a job!

I transitioned out from Hawaii. I had no luck getting any responses from my resumes until we actually moved back to Southern Illinois (to be close to family). After we moved, I got a position within a few weeks of actively looking for a new career.

Personally I was not willing to relocate... in fact, that was why I departed military service.. I was uninterested in PCS'ing again.

I was willing to continue serving (and I don't mean ROAD), continue to take the hard tasks, difficult jobs...and deploy as part of my unit. And offered my branch manager that.. But was told All Senior NCO's had to PCS if they had been on stations more than 3 years.. .. Supposedly this came from top... you know, they guy at the time that had been in the same job for much longer than 3 years, and had a branch chief in senior NCO assignments that had been at the same location for more than 10 years. ... Do as I say, not as i do....so I didn't.

I was lucky enough, SFC Charles W. Robinson, to be able to stay where I finished up my career, but I was willing to move. After 30 years of PCS moves, what's one more? Not a problem. That's what it is.
