Being Combat ready seems to have watered down within the sustainment community. I am not saying all sustainment units are displaying attitudes/behaviors showing lack of combat readiness, but a good deal of them are. The trend seems to be that combat readiness should be left to the combat arms world, and that you should only be concerned with your MOS..and that is it. This an absolute No-Go. Regardless of your MOS, you need be ready to react and FIGHT....mocking things such as marksmanship, live fire excercises, CLS, Combatives, warrior tasks and battle drills etc... shows who the real fools are. We are all Soldiers, we must all be Combat Ready to win our nations wars...regardless of what Career Field you are in.

Unfortunately, I have to say that you are correct. During my logistics time, I drill my troops beyond METL requirements. Things like mounted/dismounted Land Nav, weapons proficiency beyond BRM, etc... was a normal day at my company. Did some of my soldier bitched about it because “we are logies and not ground pounders”? Of course they did. But it got squashed immediately. Is all about command emphasis and been able to say no every now and then to higher folks in order to allocate training calendar space when needed. Remember that support units always have a crap load of tasks while on garrison, requiring some artistics ways to deflect them.

You’re absolutely right. Since I came to SFAB a year ago I’ve learned more in the last 12 months than I have in 10 years in the army. You hit the nail on the head. I will make sure my soldiers know what it REALLY means to be combat ready!
