Instead of testing at Schools, how's about they just ramp up the freaking ASVAB and catch EVERYONE? Of course it's important to articulate a position in writing. What about the average Joe (PVT) that cannot comprehend what is written?

CW3 (Join to see) good read and share, it reminds me of the SQT-Skills Qualification Test of the early 1990s when I took it. It will only help you IMHO, especially when you transition out the military.

I agree, I've seen a lot of writings from all sorts of people in the military, I think having an exam can only help. We have to write/type all of the time, but it is a skill that requires polishing. Thanks for the reply.

SGT Sean Wike - I don't think it's to just point out the weakness, but give some effort to strengthen it. I was terrible at my first couple of college papers, but as those were better written, I was able to write and communicate better at work. I'm waiting to have a solid opinion until I see if they are going to teach how to write (using APA or MLA standard) this could be a great tool to prepare NCOs for the civilian sector and to improve communication while still serving as we widely rely on e-mail and memos to send messages.

CW3 (Join to see) - It would also make those monthly counselings legible...

In the FA world we often use Text messages to communicate over our net. Those messages can be critical. I've seen more than a few come across the net that required responses seeking clarification.

SGT Jason Keefer - that's a really good point, it's more than just the admin part. We used MIRC and BFT messages overseas, text is used often in daily ops.

While I was in, I witnessed the horrible writing skills of some otherwise fine leaders. I think college levelcomposition classes would be an excellent professional development tool.

And those are free, using tuition assistance and GI Bill.... we just need to make time for Joes to do it and/or make it mandatory.
