June is PTSD Awareness Month so I'd like to highlight a Caregiver who makes invisible wounds, visible.

Lyra Helms is a 28-year-old occupational therapist and full-time caregiver for her husband, an Army veteran. Lyra helps Adam maintain a routine and coordinates all his health care daily. This includes managing medication, reminding him of daily tasks, setting a budget, and making appointments. She is also trained in crisis communication and de-escalation, which gives her techniques to calm Adam when he begins to feel stress and anxiety.

“It took me a long time to realize how my post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injuries affected my daily life,” Griego said. “It’s important for ‘invisible wounds’ to be recognized and understood by health care providers at the very least.”

Thank you for that information! Having good support is important in the best of days but when suffering from PTSD, depression or any other mental health issue it is even more so. Knowing you have someone to listen, and that you're not alone is very important.
