I just attended BLC in June. My class was one of the first to experiment with this new curriculum. As we all know, skills such as land navigation, PRT, and DNC are skill level 1 tasks, which brings light to why the Army is expecting future NCOs to be able to teach it during the course. I don’t mean to critique too harshly being my classmates and I were technically the “guinea pigs”, but there are things many areas that have room for improvement. I feel like the main focus of the course was on our ability to lead and teach, which is good, but it left little room for areas that we actually could have learned from (i.e. Counselings, NCOERs, the left and right limits of a NCO, and etc...). I put my 100% effort into the course, and achieved Commandant’s List, so I’m not trying to sound like I didn’t apply myself, but the entire course seemed like a high school/Basic Training refresher. I tried to learn as much as possible from the curriculum, but I walked away with little to no new knowledge. This is my respectful input and opinion.

What is the Army thinking? I watched this video and all i could think is WHY? If something is not broken you do not abandon it you improve on it. I would not have been the NCO i was if I hadnt had the training of my day.

Anytime they use the word “experimental” when teaching a course I get nervous. It just tells me that they hope the new course will meet its objectives.

SMSgt Thor Merich exactly! Why are we “experimenting” with the actual training needs of our soldiers and leaders? We should experiment with focus groups and then roll out a finished product...one that doesn’t seem to change significantly every 2-4 years.

A team of educators formulated this through proof of principle. I’ve never had to write Course curriculum so I try not to be too judgmental. The only way to improve is to make purposeful changes. Focus groups are great for sales and marketing, but they did conduct mulptle surveys with NCOs and Officers to see what changes we would like to see.
