Prior Air Force Master Sergeant (E-7) heading to Army BCT (Ft. Benning) as a Sergeant First Class (E-7) in 3 weeks. What does basic look like as an E-7?

Yeah they should pull you aside and brief you before the training starts.....probably when you report in. I will tell you when I went to Air Assault School, we had a SFC complain publicly in front of the PVT, PFC's........the whole class that as a SFC he wasn't going to pull guard duty on everyones equipment while they breaked for lunch and he found it insulting he was on a work detail with Privates. Eh, my advice is never do that because the NCO Cadre tore him a new azzhole publicly in response. Just be very formal and humble at Ft Benning your first priority is to learn. Asserting rank while in an Army school is always a bad idea unless your told otherwise. Let the other NCO's tell you what is OK and not OK when they brief you prior to training.

I was a 40 year old National Guard Staff Sergeant called up in 2001 to Ft Bliss. After much pleading with my SGM and only after no one else would take the slot, I got to go to Air Assault School. Because of who I was, I was just another private in 4th PLT. My Squad Ldr was a SPC 4 and my PSG was a newly minted SSG. I was ridden relentlessly by the cadre as the perceived weak link. By day 7 I replaced a MSG as the PL. After graduation, I was brought on board as a "black hat" for the rest of my deployment.

When I was a DI and prior service personnel of other branch or even returned to duty after separation I would talk to them and made them platoon leaders and never had a problem everything else the did as a regular trainee if needed

Been a while ago but went to an 11B school (was retraining but never had the MOS). Instructors asked me what the hell I was doing there as a 40yr old E6. I could probably teach most of the classes (which I actually did a few at the instructors request). But never pulled rank or attitude. Carried the PR77 on one exercise and M60 on another. Helped that I led the class of mostly younger troops in PT, doing 12:30 in the 2mile run.

I went from the Army to the Michigan Air National Guard on a try one (one year enlistment) program. This was after an eleven year break in service. I took correspondence courses for my new AFSC. Did not have to go through Air Force Basic Training.

Amn Jennifer Lee (Doerflinger) Hill - The Air force is indeed rank grade Lighter. Your SSG ( staff Sgt) is E-5 while ours is E-6. Years ago the airforce did AWAY with the rank of SGT, for reason unknown, to me. Now you go from SR Airman, to Staff SGT.
I hope this helps.

I went to basic at age 34 had a great time. went in as a PFC I already knew a lot of military courtesy and doctrine. The weapons were a breeze I was in a squad leader position for the duration. Never pulled age or wisdom. I remained part of the team and helped when asked by the DS. I was called grandpa but thought of it as honor. No issues ever. great times

In 1970 WOC school I was surprised that so many prior NCOs quit because they could not deal with the harassment from the TAC officers. We. Newbies were to dumb to know any thing different. It was like basic on steroids. The couple of Marines who had transferred to the Army to fly, though, laughed at how light the harassment was.

I was a DS in D 3/10, late 80's early 90's, at FLW (not when this Soldier went through) and then my son was a DS in the same BN but in C Co. Nothing triggered this comment except that I saw the caption of his BCT. He must have gone on to AIT somewhere else, maybe even on post.

WO1 Dave Middleton - As a prior enlisted, when I went to West Point they came down on me for "smirking" too much. I could not take Beast Barracks seriously and always wore a sly smile with the games the upperclassmen played.
