Do you know the difference between Advancement, Promotion and also Appointment beyond commission? (that applies to civil service too)

There is a real difference between an administrative advancement in rank and an actual "promotion"....although the terms are often used interchangeably. Most First Sergeants know the answer. However, it also technically relates to the officer corps beyond initial commissioning.
