Both are E-4 so it's not really a "promotion" over the other. It's a delineation of duties (kinda like MSG vs 1SG). CPL is an NCO thus a leadership position. SPC is not. Couple of factors will come into play:

1) is there a need for a junior leader? If your mTOE or TDA does not support a CPL, likely you will not be made into one.

2) have you demonstrated leadership skills necessary to be able to do the job.

The LTC is spot on CPL in the Army is a Leadership position its a lateral promotion. It is or was used when an E4 was placed in an E5 Slot waiting for the promotion board and list. If you blew one or the other you moved back to SPC. No Harm No Foul you got another shot the next year or if your Leadership wanted you were able to sit in that slot until you learned enough to be promoted. Normally its an Infantry or Combat Arms type unit thing not used a lot anymore. I think due to the way promotions are done but a unit could still be using it, if so its up to your unit.

To be a cpl, you need to be in a leadership slot, like Assistance Squad leader. Just take on more responsibly and you make cpl. Then that when the real fun begins. Good luck and I hope this help you out.

PFC Tuan Trang the only CPL that I've seen here, Meade, was because she had so much accomplished as a SPC and her CDR wanted to have everything on a NCOER. But that's CDR discretion. You could get to a Company as a CPL and the CDR can say, I don't need you as a CPL, you are gonna be SPC again. Which is not a demotion since you are in the same pay grade. CPT (Join to see) correct me if I'm wrong.

You are right. It is reserved for soldiers that are in a leadership position. There are also DA Corporals. A Dept of the Army Select CPL keeps their rank even when PCSing. They are few and for between. It happens when they are moved into a position that requires an NCO. CPL Recruiting did that. Besides that it is pretty rate.

I think that making a SPC into a Cpl is like taking a SPC and making him an acting SGT in some cases where you need to fill a leadership slot until you either get a SGT transferring in to the unit or you get promoted. Just my .02 cents I may be wrong I have been retired since 91.

SSG Duke Hall It shows how long I have been out of the RA. I have been Guard to long. It is really rare to see a DA CPL. Usually you will get SGT quick. I got SGT after my third year. As you know infantry promotes fast. My sister in law is CPL. She is in Logistics and she is in a NCO slot. So he got CPL.

SSG Duke Hall I'm to learn, maybe that's what she meant when she told me that. But I wasn't that far from the point. Thanks for the correction!
