Being a Marine and earning the rank of Marine NCO, then serving in the NG as a SPC, I observed both Marine NCO's and "ARMY" NCO's. That said, I can clearly and emphatically state that a Marine Cpl has more military bearing and NCO leadership skills than most ARMY E-5, E-6 and E-7's.
I watched every ARMY NCO/SNCO's I served with (with the exception of the one former Marine who was then an ARMY Ssgt in my unit) care simply about their own needs. Not one cared about the troops they supposedly led. They wouldn't take charge at all. These NCO's/SNCO's literally had to be told what to do and when to do it. Their troops had zero military bearing or discipline and they'd have run the other way in a firefight all while the so called ARMY NCO/SNCO's ensured their lockers were filled with snacks, drinks and video's. I've seen Marine Cpl's step up and lead their fellow Marines exactly as a Gunnery Sgt would had the Gunny been there. Get it done and get it done right the first time without being told what needs to be done. We just know!
These differences in leadership skills are blatantly obvious but nearly all ARMY personnel refuse to admit this. My question is why? Could it be because soldiers are simply promoted just because and never push themselves to lead, work and engage or is it because Marines earn their promotion to NCO and are known to be true leaders, always take charge?

I was in the Marine Corp from 59-63. I joined the Army and I couldn't believe the difference a Sgt with no leadership ability. He thought he came first and not his men. Their was lax disipline Even some of the Lt,s fresh out of college. I joined the Army because I wanted to get Married to a Japanese girl. The Marine corp said "If we wanted you to have a wife we would issue one." My enlistment was up so I joined the Army. 18 months later I took Leave went to japan and got married with the approval all the way up to 2nd Army Hdqs. I went from Cpl in the Marine Corp to PFC in the Army to SP/5 in 15 months. and was offered a Comission as a 2nd Lt. in Vietnam if I would stay in Vietnam another year. I chose my wife of 8 months instead and went home. The Army had so many draftees in the army, they didn't have enough experienced regulars. this was 1966. I spent 3yrs in the Army that was enough for me.

2d Lts didn't last long in battle, so perhaps a good call on your part. Many Marine SNCOs got a bar in VN. Some survived, but it impacted the SNCO ranks greatly.

I’m still in, and although I’ve never been in the Marine Corps, I agree with what you’re saying. The leadership and discipline is sorely lacking.

I was never in anything but the Marines but according to buddies who were Army first and then went to the Marines there is no comparison with regard to discipline and comradery. The Marines have far better cohesion. My brother in law was in the Marines first then went Army. He hated it and couldn't wait for his enlistment to end. You confirmed what I already heard first hand.
