Have no problem with the Red/Gold structure as it is. Guess everything has to change when you have a Cancel culture mentality.

Red stripes NEVER specifically meant "misconduct", as it was always OPTIONAL WITH THE INDIVIDUAL, to move from Red to Gold, if entitled to Gold. And Gold is MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE to buy. So "wearing red" COULD mean one was not entitled to gold, OR it could mean someone didn't want to pay the differential price to change all crows and stripes to gold.

Make all stripes SILVER!
I knew folks who were hell on wheels in their early days of naval service. In fact I knew a master Chief who did not put Gold on until he had 20 years as you had to have 12 straight years of Good Conduct to restore to Gold. In fact all service strips should be silver until retirement and if you retire with an honorable on your DD-214 then at your retirement you should dawn GOLD for the purpose,
Otherwise silver allows for time to learn from mistakes without having a visible reminder of those mistakes. Lets call it a "silver lining". Just a thought!

I didn't go gold until I hit the 18 year mark. It was a source of pride for me as I was the only chief in the mess that wore red. It also made the Os a bit wary like I was a rabid dog. I used that to full effect.

I had broken service (7 years 6 month's the first time). When I attained 12 years of continuous service it was time to retire.

Don’t think that the rules should have been changed. Just another example of taking away from Naval Traditions to conform to Political Correctness!

“Everybody gets a trophy” culture. There is NOTHING wrong with red stripes...red or gold they still show time in service.

I myself didn't go Gold until 18. I had a Command Master Chief who retired with 34 still Red.
