I give a lot of leeway to people that have to kill or be killed day in and day out. The system expects perfection (or something very close to it) in imperfect, unclear, changing, murky and dynamic situations. Second guessing battlefield decisions is easy to do from a desk chair thousands of miles away.
I am not suggesting Gallagher was perfect or faultless but some of these charges and trials seem over the top and designed to make people think twice in situations where thinking twice can get you killed.

I have mixed feelings on this. On the one hand, he did wrong.
On the other, there was a team issue here that continues to haunt.
I think if Chief Gallagher retires at his now reinstated rank, it is fine.
My concern is over the message it sends about morals and discipline.

Profession of Arms is not a game we all like to play in the arena, but someone has too!

Are senior enlisted required to retire at the last honorably served rank as officers are? If so having been found guilty of one charge, he probably should be retired one pay grade less.

This has both pros and cons. But we do have to give our folks we ask to do these missions a bit of leeway
